Tablet wars heat up with new Kindle Fire HDCNET's Kara Tsuboi talks with senior editor Donald Bell about how Amazon's new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader and Kindle Fire HD devices will impact the highly competitive tablet market.
Hi everyone car -- tsuboi cnet.com join my senior editor Donald -- and Donald Jeff Bezos CEO Amazon has just made some big announcements about the new line of tablets coming out mean he's got the fire we've got a couple of new things. Tell us first of all about the the newest device -- -- -- paper. When it's -- that with I think that paper away there -- the original kind of Kindle product and this is now the evolution of that. Which includes a high resolution display so that the page looks all the more realistic. Also eliminated displays that if you want to read this in bed at night and -- -- Get an extra case to have a light cream over your. -- -- 119 dollars. And -- equivalent to the fire and a lot of big announcements there any different sizes and. A higher price went on -- expects well yeah this is that now range of price plans last year we saw the Kindle fire and came out of nowhere and really got a lot of people excited. 599. Dollars tablet option. Now they're keeping up the planet around a little in the price -- 259 dollars. I'm doing HD version still seven X 299. Dollar price and Nelson can jump to eight point each version that's that 299 dollars. And yet adding some features that are going to be -- -- How people take those features. But in the very top of the line is going to be sold for -- and now with my mind because I actually have a hard time believing and buying now line. But this now 499. Dollar eight point nine inch 32 gigabyte. Tablet that's -- forgy can activity -- -- And that starts to cut into the territory of time to -- and yet I really taken a hard look at the iPad and then taking a different strategy though -- -- only a little bit more. Memory that then you're gonna get -- stores and you're gonna get it and I and also the four -- option in the you're paying fifty dollars a year. Instead of the -- you go pricing the iPad which is can -- a monthly charge. So you're getting very limited music 250 megabytes per month for what should be able to download -- -- which isn't very much especially for doing video. But it's a different strategy. So -- -- interest and see if that. Works. I think they're targeting who's gonna buy these higher end. You know fires -- -- multi market I think the high end ones are really there for show I think that. My eyes actually asking people the ones they are excited about they're talking about the price drop on the original Kindle 560. Dollars and 999 dollar price point it's still really this sweet spot I think. Because there are also competing against Google who has their nexus seven outlook 299 dollars to. So there really haven't yet tried to put out fires from the pun intended with the whole had a different products I in got a lot of different users in a lot of competitors. Finally this announcement is really all tablet focused -- on -- editors analysts thought that meeting could be. -- -- -- the phone rumors look at they're gonna make an Apple TV competitor. Lot of rumors -- won't be really interesting to see from Amazon's that they are due to the good jobs selling other people's phones on the website user. I think that what the Kindle fire did for tablets that show people that. There is that there's room for much simpler tablet out there. I think that same case can be made for Smartphones and more simplified Smartphone. Let's just hadn't Amazon services. We'll see maybe they'll come -- that come out that sometime in 2013 right they found success with one piece of hardware. Department.
