Synology Disk Station DS107+
>> Hi this is Dong Ngo, testing analyst for CNET dot com and today we take the first look at DS-107 plus NAS drive from Synology. This is a single bay NAS drive meaning it can only hold one hard drive. The device supports SATA hard drive up to 1TB. It doesn't come with a hard drive, so you would have to get one yourself; but it's very easy to install the hard drive even though you will need a screwdriver for the job. It is a rather compact NAS drive which manages to peg in a lot of expansion ports including 2 USB ports in the back, 1 eSATA port in the front, and another USB port also on front. The eSATA port is for hooking up another SATA hard drive while the USB ports work with a variety of devices including printers, external hard drive, and USB speakers. The DS-107 plus can handle 3 USB devices at a time as long as only one of them is a printer. It also has a nifty feature called USB drive copy that's activated by this button on the front. This button when pressed, will copy the entire content of a USB drive onto a form of the NAS internal hard drive. We find this a very useful feature. It's worth noting though, it works only with some drives that are bigger than 512MB and formatted in FAT32 file systems. Generally we really like this DS-107's design except for it's front SATA port. It would make a lot of sense if this port is on the back of the device as an eSATA hard drive hook up, would be rather permanent. The DS-107 plus has a long list of features. What we like the best is it's ability to work with network cameras to create a very easy to manage surveillance system. The NAS works with up to 6 cameras and has built in support for a long list of existing network cameras on the market; like this Panasonic BLC1. Unfortunately, only one camera license is included with the device and you have to pay for separate licenses for other cameras and each of them costs 50 dollars. Once again, this is the Dong Ngo and this has been the first look at the DS-107 plus NAS drive from Synology. [ music ]
