CNET First Look
Sharp's 60-inch 3D TV falls shortAlthough priced well for a large 3D TV, the Sharp LC-LE745U series can't muster the 2D picture quality to earn our recommendation as a good value.
I'm David Katzmaier from CNET and with -- -- gigantic sixty inch sharp LC sixty LE 745. U. This believe it or not a larger version of this he had seventy inches of this review will plant vote. I was -- sharp's midrange LCD LED -- TV for 2012 and actually. Is the least expected to include 3-D compatibility Arthur has -- cooler Smart TVs we will get to both those little bit but first let's take a look at the styling on this TV. I it is -- pardon upon the edges of this TV are actually sharp enough to need these. Little rubber bumpers along the edge that's because the frame is actually -- -- metal most TVs have a plastic frames that's a pretty cool. And relatively subtle step up feature -- the stand is also another step up and actually has a swivel on a sixty inch size not on -- seventy however. And the whole look is really sleek and I really like that they. Maximize the screen and minimize the frame. Connectivity is pretty good around back -- go for HDMI inputs one. Two US BI component video input and a PC -- Commission treaty on this set it actually requires. Not included 3-D glasses that -- the active variety of the least expensive or about fifty bucks -- you're gonna need to spend that for each member of the family that wants to watch three -- on this TV. There's also Vudu apps on this TV for stuff like FaceBook and Twitter. Despite the fact this TV is really big when looked at from the side it seems razor -- it's only about two inches deep that's thinks it's -- backlight. In addition -- slightly better Smart TV apps there is a new gallery mode that has a full screen version those you can also. Move those apps around we really like the ability to program -- one of three remote keys to one of your three favorite apps out the prequel features in terms of customization. Speaking customization there's the plane ways to adjust the picture on this TV there's a policy amassed ten point gray scale in addition to eleven species of smoothing out all told these features hourly work as well we expected those we just stuck with -- basic two point gray scale and we just the TV. Our lab testing TV didn't perform quite as well as the less expensive version which was surprising. The black levels on this that are a little bit lighter so they don't have quite as much impact when you're watching picture in a dark room. The TV also has a little bit worse uniform recently saw some slight blotches on the TV screen again this kind of things weren't as visible on the less expensive version. And again with those -- advance picture controls not working as well as we expected. We -- nearly color quite as good as again on the less expensive version so all told if you're just looking for two. The step down LE 640 use a -- to the 745. So I'll -- it you're just considering two. LE 640 U over the 745. Three picture quality and see you again not quite as good as we'd like to see the main issue was -- -- which appears this ghostly images around some of the on screen 3-D objects that's. Again not quite as good as we've seen on some of the better LCD TVs this year. That's a quick look at the sharp LC LE 745 U series on data caps.
