Samsung StriveThe Samsung Strive is one of Samsung's better messaging phones, and it offers a few new features.
[ MUSIC ] ^M00:00:03 >> Hi, I'm Ken Sherman, senior editor here at CNET.com. Today we'll take a first look at the Samsung Strive. This is a new phone for AT&T. It's also called the SGHA687. It does come in two colors; we're looking at the black version, but you can get it in purple as well. This does not have a touchscreen. The Samsung Sunburst, which came out at about the same time for AT&T, does have a touchscreen. But this is actually a slider phone with a physical keyboard. It does feel a little light in the hand, but actually the slider mechanism is pretty sturdy so just make sure you have a firm grip on it when you're texting. And I wouldn't want to drop it too many times. The display does take full advantage of the phone's size, which I like. You'll see there's a large toggle here with an OK button in the middle. The only thing I don't like is this OK button goes to the web browser when you're in standby mode. I really prefer it that you can open the main, main menu. Instead you have to do one of the soft keys for that. Most of the keys are flat except for the two keys on the end and the toggle. But I didn't have any problems using them. There are four rows of keys, so that does mean that numbers and symbols are put together with letters, which is pretty common on a lot of messaging phones. On the left spine you'll see the volume rocker here. On the back you'll see the camera lens. There's a self-portrait mirror, and there's no flash. Over on the right spine you'll see the camera shutter, and there's the micro USB port for the charger and for any kind of syncing cable. You'll have to remove the battery cover to find the SIM card slot, which is always the case, but also the micro SD slot is located right there. Inside the phone, you'll find messaging, of course, personal organizer, Bluetooth, speaker phone, so your standard array of features. AT and T address book which allows you to store most of your contacts on AT and T's servers for safekeeping. It's also enhanced messaging, which is a new feature that if you get a text message that's sent to a group of people, you can reply all, which is, isn't common on a lot of phones. I'm Ken Sherman, and this is the Samsung Strive. ^M00:01:38 [ MUSIC ]
