CNET First Look
Samsung SGH-T659 (T-Mobile)The Samsung SGH-T659 is a good performer, but it offers nothing new in features and design.
[ Music ] >> Kent German: Hi. I'm Kent German, Senior Editor here at CNET.com. Today, we're going to take a first look at the Samsung SGHT659. This is a new phone for T-Mobile service. I haven't seen a design like this in about three years. Definitely takes us back to a time when Samsung was pumping these out one after another, these spin-slider phones in silver. A little tired of seeing this quite a few times before. Just the layout of the keys down here, the display right here. So, kind of wish Samsung could have gone into a little more with this. Features are also pretty minimal. Nothing we haven't seen before. It performs well. It makes calls. It actually has pretty decent photo quality, but just wasn't impressed with the overall form of the thing. But we'll get into some of the details. The display is pretty bright. Exactly what you'd expect in a phone like this. Two hundred sixty-two thousand colors. Menu design is fine. Pretty simple and intuitive. On the back, the camera lens and the self-portrait mirror are hidden behind a slider, so you will need to have it open. When you're holding the phone like this to take a photo, it's fine, but when you're holding it horizontally, it's a little bit awkward. I felt like I had to hold it with two hands to snap the photo. Features inside. Messaging and pop 3 e-mail. Bluetooth. Basic organizer features. The two megapixel camera. Like I said, it has pretty decent photo quality. Colors look good, and the objects look good for this, for this kind of shooter. It does have a basic music player as well so you can get tunes. Also works with telenav for some GPS, and it is coming out of T-Mobile's 3G service, which is pretty nice, but that doesn't make a whole lot of difference when you're on a web browser. It's really when you're downloading those large files and you're using the Internet on a [inaudible] browser. So overall, phone of three years ago. They just happen to intro, introduce it today. I'm Kent German, and this is the Samsung SGHT659. [ Music ]
