Plume Adaptive Wi-Fi system looks cool, costs too muchCNET editor Dong Ngo explains the one and only way a basket of these little Wi-Fi Plume pods can be money well-spent.
Hi guys this is the plume adaptive wi-fi system. This is quite unique because instead of just two or three hardware units this comes in a bunch. You can get up to six units here in a pack. You can use as many as you want. Here's how it works. You take one of these pieces here, it's called the plume pod. Now connect this one to your modem and connect the rest around your home, one for each room. And that's it, you're done. Now we have a wi-fi at every corner. And if you happen to extend your home and have more room, we got more part. And again, you're done. Pretty cool, right. What's even more cool is this mobile app here. See you can use this to very easily set up your network, and then view your home networks as a solar system. Mesmerizing. Now the not so cool part. First is the pricing. Now one of these costs $69. You get three of them for $179 or all six for $329 but remember you need one of these for each room and even a small house can have more than Six rooms, so in the end that can be quite expensive. And the thing is, if you live in a small home, even a single [UNKNOWN] that cost less than $100 can get the job done. [MUSIC] You don't need a system! Second is the performance. Now each of these is quite small. So the range is not so great. It's not a problem. By desire with each of these in your rooms, you are not away from your part anyways. In m testing, the screen is almost always fluctuated between 25 megabits per second to 125 megabits per second. And even at 125 megabits per second, it is the slowest I've ever seen compared with any other wi-fi system for all routers I have tested. At 10 of 15 feet away that said, if you just want to be online or stream Netflix that's no problem because even for content which is the heaviest trimming task requires just 25 per second. But if you want faster local wi-fi speed for more serious things, this set will not Cut it and finally there's almost no feature well it can do port forwarding and that's it no web filtering, no online security, nothing else and you do need an account with Bloom Design before you can access the system or you can make use of the system and the system needs to connect to the vendor at all time and that means without the internet you can not melt your own network and the vendor can know everything you do with the system. And by the way you need a lot of wall socket before you can use this system and if you have children or pet this part here can be easily mistaken as toys. In that case this is my solution, you get another set and you give that out to them. To play with and if that's keep them happy, well then, and only then, it's money well spent. Almost as well spent as the time you spent on this video and that's because I'm done well and this is the bloom adaptive wi-fi system. [MUSIC]
