[ Music ] ^M00:00:03 >> Hi, I'm Jessica Dolcourt, a Senior Associate Editor at CNET.com. I've got your first look at PCD's rather awkwardly named CDM8635 from U.S. Cellular. This is an entry level phone that's especially geared towards seniors and people with medical concerns. We've got to say we like some of the software and hardware features designed to help people out. This phone has a clam shell design with nice sleek lines. It's got a 2.5 millimeter headset jack, a dedicated camera button and button to launch voice commands. You'll also find the volume rocker and the micro USB charger port. There's a bare bones 1.3 megapixel camera as well. While it's nice being able to attach a photo to a contact, the blurry photo quality is definitely a weak point. Easy to read and easy to use are the themes here on this phone. Inside, there's a colorful display with large fonts. Below that are four handy shortcut buttons. They respectively zoom into a text field when you're entering text, turn on speaker phone, get to the alarm and to open the photo gallery. The CDM8635 has two soft keys, a four-way navigation toggle and two more specialized buttons, one dials 911 and the other pulls up three emergency contacts you've entered. The buttons on the dial pad are nice and large, again with numbers that are easy to read. Other features include text and multimedia messaging. As part of those unique features aimed at seniors, however, there are help balloons that float a tool tip above every menu item by default. There are also three tools to adjust audibility, one that slows down speech, one that increases the caller's pitch, and one that helps dampen background noise. And that's about it. What we will say is that we experienced very good call quality in San Francisco. The CDM8635 retails for about $20 with a two year service agreement and $50 mail in rebate. Once again, I'm Jessica Dolcourt, and this has been the PCD CDM8635 from U.S. Cellular. ^M00:01:56 [ Music ]
