Overkill: $3M missile destroys $200 droneA US ally took on an adversary using small quadcopter drones by firing a surface-to-air missile.
A $200 drone was destroyed by a $3 million missile. Drones are an interesting category of tech, but some people think they're nothing but trouble. In a talk, US General David G. Perkins explained that a close ally of the US was dealing with an adversary that was using small quadcopter drones. In response, The ally shot down the drone with a Patriot missile. General Perkins said, that quadcopter that cost $200 bucks from Amazon.com did not stand a chance against a Patriot. He did not specify which ally fired the missile, nor did he disclose exactly what kind of quadcopter was shot down so we'll have to use our imaginations. Perkins went on to say that this may not have been the best economic exchange. To reiterate a Patriot missile costs around $3.4 million. Normally, Patriot missiles are surface-to-air missiles used to shoot down enemy aircraft and other missiles. Patriot missiles also travel over four times the speed of sound A small drone could be somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 or $300. In his talk, Perkins explained that dealing with drones is not an air defense problem, but a commander problem. Drones may be better dealt with using electronic warfare.
