CNET First Look
Motorola VE440 Limited EditionThe Limited Edition of this Motorola music phone offered by MetroPCS comes with two stylized back covers designed by a Los Angelean tattoo artist.
>>Who says that basic phone can't have a little pizzazz. I'm Jessica Dolcourt with CNET.com and here's a first look at the Motorola VE440 Limited Edition from MetroPCS. This is a simple candy bar phone that's got all the essentials for calling and texting. There's some good design elements in here like an accessible 3.5mm headset jack and a dedicated camera button. You'll notice that the phone face isn't perfectly symmetrical. The left spine actually angles up towards the screen which makes it easy to see and use these music playback buttons on the onboard music player. On the back is the 1.3 megapixel camera. We like the bubbly plastic keypads on this phone which give the key pad a roomy feel but found out that the soft keys and power buttons were a little small for our tastes. Inside you've got your tools, phone book and MetroWEB connection. There's also a music player that you can use if you've got a microSD card. Luckily, the phone comes with 1GB of expandable memory to get you started. So far the features we talked about apply to all VE440 phones but the limited edition that we've got right here adds some local flavor in the form of stylized street art. A Los Angeles based artist known as Mister Cartoon designed two back covers and wallpaper for the VE440 which does give it some extra umph. We can't say that we adore the specialized ringtones like going to the car show and tattoo gun... >>"Good tattoos aren't cheap and cheap tattoos aren't good. Pick up the phone." >>...but hey, it's different, we'll give it that. Unfortunately, the call quality on this phone was extremely inconsistent in our test. It flopped between being reasonably clear with good volume to becoming a muffled mess sometimes all within the same call. The Motorola VE440 costs $89 for the plain black or cherry colors and $129 for the limited edition variety that we've got right here. I'm Jessica Dolcourt and this has been the Motorola VE440 for MetroPCS.
