-Hi, I'm Ty Pendlebury and this is the LG 55LV5500.
TV manufacturer, LG, has a dream and no doubt it's a dream shared by most companies.
To be number 1. For a long time, it slacked behind compatriot, Samsung.
And where it hasn't been able to complete on technology, it has competed on price, but could this new 55-incher be the model that brings technological superiority and a budget price plus turns the company's fortunes around?
The LV5500 is an LED edge-lit TV, which features an odd jumble of technologies.
For instance, the TV has some form of local dimming control, but doesn't include 3D.
Included here though is the excellent magic motion remote, which is designed to navigate the smart TV interphase and the web browser.
Unfortunately, only the up, down, left, and right buttons work in apps such as Netflix.
Design is simply okay.
It's piano black like all the rest, but it has a strange foil effect along the edges that doesn't have the panache of TVs from LG's nemesis.
In performance terms, it's the backlight that causes most of the problems here.
While it can dim quite well on an all black screen, it tends to wash complex images out and lose shadow details.
It's also impossible to turn the dimming effect off or even control it.
On the plus side, the TV gives you lots of control in setting the picture though almost too much, and colors do look natural.
While we've seen the TV go from much cheaper, its retail price is simply too much; and the competitive Samsung 6 series is a far superior TV.
