Laptop Buying Guide - Part 2Senior editor, Dan Ackerman gives us some tips for choosing the right laptop.
You may hear a lot of talk about different laptop types. I'm gonna go over some of the main one's for you. Ultraportable laptops have smaller screens, usually 11 or 12-inch screens, a lot of the tablets and hybrids and convertibles that we see now fall into this category. These are great for carrying around everyday. A 13-inch laptop is exactly what it sounds like and I think that's the most universally useful size. The MacBook Air is like that, a lot of the ultrabooks are like that, because you can carry it around pretty much everyday, but it's still big enough to use by setting up on your desk and spending all day working on it. Then you have mainstream midsize laptops, those are 14 to 15-inch systems. That's probably what you have now. You can carry it at home maybe once or twice per week, but I wouldn't carry one around everyday. And finally you have big desktop replacement systems. These have 17-inch or larger screens. They're basically meant to just sit on your desk all day long, but they are great for playing games, you just don't wanna have to carry one around.
