Rumor Has It
iPhone 5 and iPad Mini: The reckoningThis is the last show before September 12, the day we expect Apple to announce its new phone -- and maybe an iPad Mini. Will the phone be bigger? Have NFC? Will Apple kill off Siri? We round up all the most credible predictions about the new devices....
EMILY: Youre watching Rumor Has It. Im Emily Dreyfuss. KARYNE: And Im Karyne Levy. Todays episode is called iPhone 5, iPad Mini: The reckoning, because its our last show before the rumored September 12th Apple event. EMILY: So we have to place our final bets, no more stalling, on this episode we put all our chips on the table. I already bet a humiliation day that an iPad Mini would NOT come out with the iPhone 5. KARYNE: Bet you wish you could take that prediction back now? Im going to make you sing Rihanna songs dressed as a duck. EMILY: Well, not so fast, lets go over all the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini rumors, vote, and give the viewers a chance to decide who will be humiliated come September 12th. KARYNE: And if the new iPhone doesnt come out Sept 12, I canceled my dentists appt for nothing. EMILY: Send us that invite, Apple. KARYNE: First up, we've got a video from SmartPhone Medic, a phone repair service in South Carolina. The video shows the front plate of the alleged new iPhone being 30 percent larger than the 4S', and the camera and proximity sensors have moved. The video also shows some internal cable components, including one for an 8-pin connector. EMILY: What on earth is an phone repair guy in South Carolina doing with the most sought after new device on the planet? KARYNE: And if he did have those components, wouldn't they have made him sign a document saying he wouldn't post a shaky video? EMILY: And also, why would a third-party repair guy have those components? The phone hasnt broken yet. EMILY: Now for the iPad Mini, the unicorn that might headbutt me with its horn if Apple unleashes it into the wild. The most damning rumor that the smaller iPad is a real product comes from AllThingsD, a site we read and respect. Now, the report cites several unnamed sources--drink!--who claim to know that the iPad Mini will be unveiled AFTER the iPhone 5, at a separate event in October. KARYNE: Great, that's when I rescheduled my dentist appointment. Macotakara, a site I like to pronounce but dont necessarily trust, says a trusted Asian source insists the smaller tablet will be called iPad Mini. First off, drink. Second off, really? Theres literally no news there, Macotakara. If all the iPad Mini rumors were as flimsy as this, I wouldnt worry about having a humiliation day riding on this. Finally, Chinese site Giz-China.com claims it has photos of an iPad Mini case. And the kicker? It has a hole for a rear- facing camera supposedly. Or its just something they 3D printed themselves. Or cut out of fruit roll-up. Who knows. KARYNE: Next up, AppleInsider has been busy looking over pictures of an alleged unicorn iPhone 5 from Taiwan-based blog Apple Pro. All the pictures are of basically the usual: home button, camera, but one component stood out to AppleInsider because it's never before been seen in an iPhone: what could possibly be an NFC chip. NFC is a sort of "digital wallet" that's starting to gain traction in Europe, but is still in its infancy here in the U.S. Although a couple Android phones use it, I'm sure that the minute people hear it's being used in the next iPhone, it'll take off all crazy here in the U.S., too. EMILY: For our final rumor, we tip our hat to the dude at our office who is good at math. He counted up all the iPhones that have ever been and noticed something odd: the new one we hope is coming soon is not the 5th phone (remember the 4S disappointment?) but is actually the 6th! So...could it be called iPhone 6? KARYNE: And skip the number 5 completely, like they skipped Number 2? EMILY: If that happens, every OCD sufferer on earth will flock to Android. Others have suggested that numbers are like, so last year, and Apple will do away with them completely. In the name of simplicity, the new iPhone could be called, well, the new iPhone. KARYNE: Just like the new iPad. And the new Coke. Did I just date myself? Emily: Well, I think its going be called the new Iphone. KARYNE: I think itll be called the iPhone 5. Emily: We got a game here folks! EMILY: What do you guys think? Don't forget to vote! We're going to go ask the people of San Francisco what they think... EMILY: And the CNET verdict is....it will NOT be called the iPhone 6. Not a single CNET editor thinks a 6 is on its way, but three think it will be called the new iPhone. And one editor says it wont be called iPhone at all. KARYNE: Uh, that guys glad hes anonymous or readers would send him tomatoes. EMILY: Our comment of the week comes from jpolk84 who writes: "I once posted a picture of my cable remote and my Apple remote on Facebook with the caption: 'Why I wish Apple owned the cable company!' Nuff said." I love that he didn't just comment, but he commented about previously commenting. KARYNE: Thats our show everyone, share your rumors at firstname.lastname@example.org. And tweet us! EMILY: And thanks to this week's sponsor, eBay. See you next time.
