Google adds phone line to Gmail
-What we're announcing today is the ability to call phones from GMail and to actually receive calls in GMail if you're a Google Voice user.
Service is basically the integration of the two communications platform that we have here in Google, the Google Chat in GMail that lets you communicate between computers and the Google Voice platform that lets you communicate between phones.
The announcement today actually makes those two platforms communicate with each other so you can place phone calls from GMail.
-So what users are gonna see starting today is right here in your Chat roster is there's gonna be Call Phone link and-- link and icons.
When you click on it, you'll see a familiar dial pad come up.
You can place-- Now you can enter any phone number to place a call so you can press the keys or you can type a number from your keyboard or you can type by name.
So I'm gonna click on Call Phone and I'm gonna call my travel agent so I'm just gonna type Tina Worldwide Travel, hit Return, and it will place the call.
-Tina's Worldwide Travel.
This is Tina.
How are you?
-Hey, how are you?
-I'm doing great.
Hey, remember that trip to Paris we discussed last week?
-Yeah, I had one more call to make and then I was gonna give you a ring.
Let me do that right now and I'll give you a call right back.
-Okay, yeah, so it's actually gonna happen today so if you could, that would be great.
-The pricing, we cannot play, we think will be very competitive.
We're offering free calls to the US and Canada and we have very attractive pricing outside of those countries.
Most of Europe landline is at 2 cents a minute, and we've actually calling mobile phones outside the US very competitive as well.
This is, you know, a little known fact that mobile phones cost a lot more to call outside the US
and we wanted to make sure that you get free calls not only for land lines but for mobile phones as well.
