Garmin Nuvi 3790T
-After picking Garmin's Flagship as editor's choice GPS device, we decided to keep one around as our daily navigator.
You're probably wondering how that work out for you.
I'm Antuan Goodwin and today we're spotlighting the Garmin Nuvi 3790T.
The 3790T is claimed to fame as of its super slim profile.
This unit packed a huge 4.3-inch screen into a device that's even thinner than an iPhone
making it extremely portable, which is good, because if you make the choice to carry a dedicated GPS device in a world where nearly every smart phone has access to some sort of GPS navigation app.
The least the Nuvi can do is not take up a lot of space.
However, if you plan on transporting the 3790T from vehicle to vehicle, be sure to take into account that you're gonna need to bring along its car cradle and power cable, which contain all the electronics for the traffic receiver and that loud speaker that's better for heard over road noise.
Now, TomTom's similarly sized XL series of GPS devices are not nearly as thin as the 3790T, but when you consider the TomTom's low profile easy port mouth, we think it may gain a slight edge in vehicle to vehicle portability.
However, for vehicle to pedestrian portability or vehicle to bicycle portability, the Garmin is unmatched.
Free the bulk of its cradle and let's face it, you won't need that traffic data when you're on foot.
The Nuvi fits perfectly into that hand slides nicely into a pocket.
The pedestrian routing mode is easily accessed from the home screen
and an accelerometer triggered screen rotation allows uses to hold the Nuvi in a more hand friendly portrait orientation.
Back in the car, the 3790T offers Bluetooth hand free calling, which sounds great when you use it with the cradle's larger speaker, lifetime traffic update and the set of ecoRoute tools that help drivers to monitor and improve their driving efficiency.
As the Flagship model with the requisite Bluetooth connection, we expected the Nuvi to both compatibility with Garmin's ecoRoute HD module
for the best possible monitoring of the vehicle emissions and fuel economy, but sadly that's not the case.
Perhaps, this function will be added in the future update.
Finally, we're still very much in love with the 3790Ts voice control function, which is one of the first truly hand free voice command system.
Users are able to choose a voice prompt phrase of liking and simply speak to the Nuvi to access to most important functions such as entering a destination, adjusting screen, brightness or volume,
or making and receiving your call on your Bluetooth paired phone.
-Find by name.
-Speak the name of a popular place.
-Did you say In-N-Out Burger?
-Searching for In-N-Out Burger, select the line number.
-Would like to begin navigation.
-This level of voice command functionality and driver safety is unmatched by any GPS device we've tested so far because the driver doesn't need to take their hands off of the wheel to access the system.
The Nuvi 3790T also has 2 features called traffic trends and my trends that learn daytime traffic trends for traffic flow and your pattern for navigating to your favorite location, so for example if you go to work everyday at a.m.
Eventually, the Nuvi will learn that and offer that as a destination when hop in the car at 8 a.m.
However, our driving habits were too erratic for system to be of much use to us.
Your mileage may vary.
The 3790T also packs many of the features that we've come to expect from GPS devices of this caliber such as text to speech pronunciation of street names and graphic line guidance.
As an added bonus, the Nuvi even has a 3D terrain map from most areas and building map for major metropolitan areas.
At the end of the day, theirs is a ton of use texts crammed into the 3790Ts small package,
which is why we like so much.
It's got the form and it's got the function.
I'm Antuan Goodwin and we just put the spotlight on the Garmin Nuvi 3790T.
