Battlefield 1: New details from behind closed doors gameplayWhile the Battlefield 1 trailer went public, GameSpot's Mike Mahardy got an insider view into gameplay. Here is all you need to know about the much anticipated WW1-era Battlefield to come.
Get ready, men! [MUSIC] Get down! Hello, welcome to a very special report on Battlefield 1, you probably already seen the trailer. It's got mustard gas, it's got horses, it's got Red Barons, my. Battlefield is going to World War I. We Also the trainer, but Mike McCarty, you just ran back from Redwood Shores where you saw actual gameplay of this and you got a lot more details of what this game has to offer. First things first, what was in the gameplay trailer that we haven't seen, and how does it look? It looks awesome, and the whole focus of multiplayer is the land, air and sea. So in the gameplay we saw, they were cutting in between the pilot of this red triplane, it looked like the Red Baron. And they cut back to the person on the rear gun Shredding other planes following it because they're saying that you can actually dog fight and what not. It's pretty much them trying to give you as many creative ways to add that battle field flavor that they said. Hm. But at the same time making of the World War 1 environment which it looks pretty great. The gameplay also looked really good. And what else did you see in the gameplay, what, in terms of like, scale and sort of, environment. So they showed us more, like the planes themselves, it looks like you have a lot of room to move, unlike Battlefront, which DICE also did. They also showed on foot combat, like somewhere to spring [UNKNOWN] rifle, like a medic coming up. On this like Italian hillside, it looks like someone was down. He came up behind this little rock wall, [UNKNOWN] him. They cut to a scout who was up on top, like the shot through the scope of the snipe rifle will look like the maps are huge, like early battlefield games. It looks like it's Much more expansive. And, I mean, they've got how many more months before it releases? It looks like a near final thing. We'll get into the nitty gritty in a second. We have a bunch of stuff to talk about. But just to be a little bit surface level for a second, how did it look in comparison to the one-minute in-engine trailer we did see? It looked It looks similar, like, I don't, it's not, that trailer was not like facetious at all. Was the game play trilogy like souped up at all, as with pre-genuine game play? It looked very genuine, I mean, it was definitely, like, there was a few shots where they were running through smoke and then people were getting mowed down in front of them. And it looked like it was from the first person perspective, they might have Kind of taken liberty with that, but it did look pretty similar. Vehicles. I wanna know all about them. I just have to say it's been a long time since I've been able to like fly with a joystick, and that is key. Now you saw some awesome dog fighting. My biggest concern is that we're gonna have really simplified controls joystick wise. Now were these planes rolling a lot? Could you see a genuine roll and some actual dog fighting moves. So the shots they were showing from The actual the turrets and whatnot this plane was going all over the place, dogfights. They said they actually wanna let you do dogfights while another one of your friends is doing a bombing run to clear the way for the tanks and the infantry and the other ones doing a strafing run along the trench. So I can't say that it's, I don't know how it's gonna feel obviously but they said they're making sure you can do all this stuff so because they want air combat to feel Very air combat, it's own thing, but also feed into the naval and the land. But they don't want to strip down any one to just like make them all fit together. What other type of vehicle did you see? We, we heard them talk about horses. Tanks as well, I guess? Yeah. We're in the mobile, kind of. Yeah. Yeah. The like, Battle of Lemarn was like the first time they had like. Britain had tanks, or whatever, I think I'm probably mistaken, but, yeah they had the tanks. They showed this one part, where the guy looked up from the trench and these tanks are rolling toward him. They said they're gonna have light tanks, heavy tanks, armored trucks, they're gonna have battleships. You can control the battleships. And according to Danny Berlin, the lead designer, he was saying you can demolish your shoreline with the battleships. And there will be lighted cruisers I imagine, just To add inter-naval battles, I guess, to between navies no just bombarding. Horses which will function like Aaron said, like as motorcycles I think more like to scout and flank Did they say you could fight on the horses or anything? I wouldn't be surprised because a lot of the waylay combat system. Right? Sure. They said that they've built a completely new, maybe not completely new. But they've designed this specifically to help you do. There's a bayonet charge ability. You can use your trowel shovels. You can use that trench club, that spike thing, that guy in the cover has. As well as sabers. The guy on the horse that they kept showing- Had a saber, yeah. I imagine they showed that because, maybe you can do that like Zelda or something. So it seems like we have our classic assault, medic, recon, support classes. Scout, yeah. Yeah, scout. Did you get the impression of how they work in this combined arms environment? Is it any different from previous battlefield games? Does it feel the same but with a different flavor? The way to describe it sounds pretty traditional. So support sounds like it's a class is gonna have the heavy machine guns, in this case the water cooled 30 cals I imagine. They had another one where the drum was on top of it. But it seems like Yeah it seems pretty traditional as far as they're doing it. They didn't mention what kind of progression there will be in terms of our over arching RPG umbrella or anything. What's it gonna be talking about? 64 players in the multi player battles. Wow. Boom. [LAUGH] And just branched really quickly into single player. This campaign, they said, it's featured on the multi various groups that experiencing a changing world. I don't know, it's some PR line, but they said they're trying to make it more like a Battlefield campaign as opposed to the last three games has been trying to go Call of Duty-ish. Right. It's gonna be open. I would imagine not as massive as the 64 player multiplayer arena, but- Maybe like Bad Company a little bit? Right, that's what I was thinking. Some like, little bit more open or a little like those, some of those HALO missions where you can go do different objectives at certain points, but they said- Yeah They want to have that same land, air, sea combat- Wow That's in the multiplayer in the campaign. That's what they were missing for so long. Right. What about [INAUDIBLE] there was a brief sort of leak this morning where we saw Harlem Hellfighter on what now looks like the box are actually. Did they talk about any specific [INAUDIBLE] single player that way? So Rob [INAUDIBLE] over in the UK saw a trailer at same time as me, he interviewed different people. And they were saying that Originally, the leak said it was like an alternate history World War I. It seems like they're pretty rooted in history. I'm sure they're gonna take liberties to make it more fun, but it seems like they're going, I mean the Harlem Hell fighters between that, like the Red Baron plane. They're trying to focus more on battles that not everybody knows about. So they're not just gonna be like Verdun, Marin, and those. It's gonna be like Italian Alps, the deserts of Arabia. I mean, It's a massive war that gets overshadowed all the time by World War II and they really wanna kind of make use of that era. But yeah, they didn't really say too much about single player. They said they were gonna talk about that more but I kept asking questions, they couldn't- Did you get the impression, I think when a lot of people hear World War I, they think bolt action Springfields and How are they gonna make that setting for Battlefield players who've come to expect a larger variety of weapons, and also customization of their weapons, which there wasn't a lot of in World War I. Right, I don't know a lot about customization, and again that might factor into the progression system which they didn't talk about, multiplayer, if they have one, I imagine they will. There is some customization though, right. With the weapons, I imagine you could yeah because different scopes and whatnot for bolt-action rifles, because they showed a documentary showing them shooting actual rifles and they were switching the stuff. But they said a common misconception of World War I is that it's all Springfield bolt action and then maybe a trench shotgun and a 30 caliber machine gun but they said, no, there's going to be Automatic rifles, semiautomatic rifles, revolvers, semiautomatic handguns. There's gonna be different kinds of machine guns because it's like, it's all these different armies, and all these different nations and these factions. They're gonna make use of all of them. So it's not just gonna be both action all the time. Can I put red tiger striped skin [INAUDIBLE]. [LAUGH] Cuz I need to know. At least a little cheetah skin or something like Like that. I hope so. [LAUGH] I have no idea. Only to take $219. I hope not. That'd be really funny to look at like textbooks. [LAUGH] Can you see Rob great great granddad with the zebra skin riffle. [LAUGH] I have one question on, there were some screenshots we saw like, I have to go back in Dog fight It looked like there were a lot of planes in the air. I know there was also a blimp, which I want to get to, but did you see a lot of planes flying around? So, from the gameplay they showed us, the brief one, there were at least four other planes in the sky, one was chasing him. But the screenshots, unless they're misleading, it shows like Six or seven, eight- Sure. planes in the sky. What about the last shot of trailer is a freaking blimp. Yeah. Do you know anything about that thing? So Rob promptly kept asking if you can pilot it or go inside it at all? But I don't, they havent told me anything and they didn't tell anything in the game play. The game play itself ended the same way. Or the game play showed the planes going around the blimp. So I, it definitely does not look like it's part of the skybox just for appearance sake, like Battlefront. It looks, I would be very surprised if you can't interact with it in some way because you can use battleships. Why wouldn't you be able to use- Yeah. Sure. To be fair, the battleships seem to be a lot more like the AC-130's, from previous Battlefields, where you Wreck shop and then people figure out what you're doing and they come after you and shut you down pretty fast. Okay we've talked about classes, we've talked about vehicles, we've talked about weapons, we've talked about single player and multi player. Is there anything else that sort of we haven't touched on? Or what is your sort of over all impression of it from talking to developers and actually seeing game play? I think we covered all. My overall reaction today was a very pleasant surprise. I was pointing to it. Kind of expecting the like you know a future warfare thing. Or just another battlefield five military shooter. But like a very different era that we haven't seen. I'm sure there are World War one but nothing like you know triple A budget. All right that's enough for everyone. And that's only for PC and XBOX one, right? Correct. PS4 is the 21st. I'll wait around. And I'm sure we'll have much more information on it in the next couple of months as well. Thanks so much for watching this special report. I'm Bob Field one if you have any thoughts about the game, your expectations for what you liked and what you didn't like. Please write it in the comments below. Thanks very much.
