Apple iMac (24-inch: 2.66GHz)
>> Rich: Hi I'm Rich Brown, Senior Editor for CNET.com. Today we're gonna take a look at a brand new Apple 24 inch 2.66GH IMac.
Now the big news for this particular model is that it's a 24 inch screen for $1,500 that makes it the biggest screen you can get
for the best price out of any mainstream all in one that we currently know on the market. So, on the outside of the system not much
is actually changed since the last few versions you get the nice big screen silver and black cosmetic design up front as well as
a keyboard and mouse included in the system. This keyboard is actually new there's no number pad on it anymore although you can
get the full size one on Apple's site for no additional charge when you place an order. And as you can see it retains the Apple's
pretty straight forward design, you have a webcam upfront and that's really the only outstanding feature on the front of this system.
The sides are both pretty plain you have nothing on this side and only a slot loading DVD burner over here. Around back you see
probably the biggest changes to the outside of the system. So looking down at the ports here you can see Apple added 1 USB 2, 0 port
as well as a mini display port video input. All of Apple's new cinema displays support mini display port but you can also get an
adapter to go from mini DP out to mini DVI. So Apple's also updated the core specs of the IMac; this model comes with a 9400M NVIDEA
graphics chip, 4G of RAM and a 640GB hard drive that's about what we expect to get from this price in an on one, although as usual
a standard desktop and monitor combination will get you a little more bang for your buck. That said that certainly wouldn't be such
an elegant solution. So overall in our testing we found that this Mac in particular was very good at multi-tasking it only has a
duo core chip but it was even better than some quad core Windows PC's, that's pretty unusual and this is definitely not a gaming
system but the new 3D chip helps with both game and video performance. Now combined with its fast overall speed and its rich features
like 802.11 and WiFi as well as Bluetooth we think anyone who picks up this system for day to day productivity or light duty digital
media editing will be very happy. So I'm Rich Brown and this is the 24 inch 2.66GH Apple IMac.
