Alienware Area-51 m9750Alienware's flagship gaming laptop, the Area-51 m9750, has plenty of appeal for high-end gamers, but the alien head aesthetic seems dated, and newer components are right around the corner.
[ Music ] ^M00:00:01 >> I'm Dan Ackerman, senior editor of CNET.com and this is the Alien Ware M9750. This is the Rolls Royce of gaming laptops from of course Alien Ware, one of the biggest names in high-end desktops or laptops. Now what Alien Ware did when they put together the 9750 which we first saw back at CES in 2007, they said we want to put together the biggest, meanest, craziest gaming laptop imaginable but we don't want to freeze everybody out. So if you're one of the financially challenged out there, the 9750 actually starts at around 2000 dollars, which is not crazy for a big, huge 17 inch gaming laptop like this. Of course, if you want to pack it out with all the goods now, it's more like 4000 or 5000 dollars and that's pretty much what we have here. We've two video chips in an SLI configuration, you can get a BluRay drive, you can get the absolute latest Core 2 Extreme Mobile chip from Intel. Pretty much anything that you'd want to get on a desktop computer, you could cram into this guy right here. This thing is so big and heavy, it actually dwarfs the full size keyboard and number pad. Look how much extra room you have here. You can almost get lost. The optical drive actually right here in the front of the system. And that's a little unusual, kind of a nice touch there. And of course, you've got a DVI output for sending HD signal at your big TV. But no HDMI for 5000 dollars, I'd kind of like to have an HDMI output. You do get optical and surround sounds outs though if you can hook up your massive stereo system too. So with all this cool hardware, it's easy to see why this was our best of CES award winner in the gaming category. One note to Alien Ware though, it's been a lot of years guys and you know we all like the glowing Alien Head design, but maybe it's time to move on and get something a little more sophisticated. I'm Dan Ackerman and that's the Alien Ware M9750. ^M00:01:49 [ Music ]
