Airbus patents hypersonic, rocket-powered jetliner (Tomorrow Daily 221)
On today's show, robotic arms that do beautiful gymnastics, a hypersonic jet that might take us 5,600 miles in three hours.
And a huge change coming to one of the most popular games out there right now.
Greetings, citizens of the Internet.
Welcome to Tomorrow Daily, the best geek talk show in the known universe.
I'm Ashley Esqueda.
Punching the sky like he just doesn't care, Khail Anonymous.
It sounds like you're saying things.
I think your mic's off.
I think your mic's off.
I don't know what's happening.
Do you want to hit the headlines?
Khail, you're an amazing mime.
Oh, thank you.
You should go to mime school.
I feel like you would make a lot of money in France.
I actually took an acting class.
We're in the headlines now.
You should talk about this.
I took an acting class once.
One acting class.
And I was like, man whatever.
And that was the only thing they said I was good at.
Well they were like you were really good at miming and I was like well that's a bad compliment like I don't know what to do with that.
Mimes all over the world right now are silently screaming at the screen in horror.
Alright let's talk about Hypersonic jets.
This is pretty cool.
Airbus was granted a patent last month for what they are calling ultra rapid air vehicle and related method for aerial locomotion.
But we're gonna simplify that for you.
We're gonna say it's a plane, a jet, to be specific, that travels really, really fast.
So we used to have the Concorde.
Do you remember the Concorde?
It was a plane that went from New York to London in five hours, which is pretty fast.
This is going to be even faster and Patent Yogi who is, I have to say like thank you patent Yogi for making these great videos because he's able to pull patents that people are awarded and explain them in a very easy way and they are really well made, so high five to you Patent Yogi, so he is going to help us illustrate what this is.
So it would basically be a rocket powered plane that would carry two to three tons of cargo.
Or about 20 people.
5,600 miles in three hours.
Which is really fast.
It goes it hits speeds up to Mach 4.5.
Which is really fast and basically they achieve this By designing a plane that's pretty much like a sub-orbital rocket.
Okay, so yeah.
This is so, so fun.
How it works is
Turbo jets start moving the plane then rockets launch it into hypersonic speeds or from, I'm sorry, from.
Sonic speeds, sub sonic to super sonic speeds.
Like basically it goes almost vertically.
So here you can see it travels vertically like a rocket.
And then once it hits the speed that it needs to be kind of cruising at, then Ram Jets will keep the plane going at those speeds, until you kind of need it going down into decent.
So they're talking about sonic booms right now.
They're saying because of the vertical lift, sonic booms would not encounter the ground.
So with the Concord there was actually a whole group of people who were super angry about the noise that the Concord would make when it hit Mach, so there would be sonic booms and people are like this is too loud, you are disturbing people, I hate this.
There was like a league of like anti sonic boomers, it was literally called like the league of something, crazy but these people hated the sound which, Ok fine and this would theoretically because of the vertical lift from going from sub to supersonic.
Would dissipate sonic booms before they hit the ground, which is pretty cool.
So this is just a patent.
Just a patent, but it's Airbus, I think we're pretty due for some really good upgraded plane tech, because a lot of our plane tech is from the 1940s?
So I mean, we're using World War II era stuff I mean, we've had upgraded instruments, of course.
But The basics of plane flight have been kind of the same, so I am really excited to potentially, in the next few, maybe decade or so, two decades, see a new type of plane that can get us really far, really fast.
But it is, for all intents and purposes, kind of like a suborbital jet, it's like a suborbital rocket jet, which is kind of amazing.
Would it cost more?
Well the Concord was pretty expensive I think it was like five grand or something to get a seat and they were saying this patent only would seat about twenty passengers so I'm imagining that it would probably be pretty expensive.
Wouldn't be a cheap flight.
My great, great, great, great grand children that I won't have.
Yeah your great, great, grand children.
Your imaginary great.
Your robotic great grand children that you can just have built from your DNA.
Maybe you can be rebuilt from DNA, and you can be your own, just like Fry.
You can be your own great, Great grandchild.
I hate you, robo children.
I don't love you.
Speaking of hate.
Let's talk about who Destiny doesn't like.
No, no, no.
I hate them.
This brings us to our hashtag of the day.
Oh yeah, that's true.
Let's do the hashtag of the day, which is #TDHYPERSONIC.
And if you had a plane like this, you'd go really fast You could pretty much go anywhere in the world, pretty quickly like for lunch, so where did you go for lunch, and what would you eat?
I would probably fo to Japan.
And get some McDonald's.
I am so offended and I am sure you just offended all of Japan by saying that.
No they like McDonald's.
They are offended.
No I'd probably get some ramen.
Get some ramen?
That's a good choice.
I feel like I would go and get, could i go for brunch?
Could I make it a brunch?
You made up the rule and now you're changing it?
I mean like right in that time frame if there was [UNKNOWN] I would go to France and I would get like croissants and coffee things like brunch, and get like some pastries, coffee.
I can't believe you made the rule and then you changed it.
Well that's, I make the rules, that means I can change them whenever I want.
So yeah Cd Hypersonics tell us where you go for brunch or lunch.
All right so as I said in the intro a gigantic game is changing something huge.
That game is Destiny.
We know we all know Destiny is a first person MMO game.
A lot of people are playing it.
Spending hours and hours and hours in
Well there's character in their called Ghost.
And they decided to change him in the upcoming DLC but not just in the DLC but in the entire world.
They're replacing the audio entirely.
And they're replacing the voice of Peter Dinklage, we all know him as Tyrion Lannister.
Emmy winning actor.
He did the voice of a character named Ghost.
Who, to put it mildly, was god-awful.
His reading was terrible.
Might have phoned it in.
As a matter of fact, I am going to now do the rest of this story in that sort of cadence, okay?
So Peter Dinklage did the voice of Ghost.
That's too much, bring it down, bring it down.
Peter Dinklage did the voice of Ghost.>> Nope, even more.
Peter Dinklage did the voice of Ghost in Destiny and he is now going to be replaced by Nolan Norris who will be re recording the entire audio of the game and in this new expansion and the new expansion's name is The Taken King
I would like to now play for you an audio clip of Peter Dinklages voice over from one of the famous quotes that he does in Destiny please play that clip Logan.
The high haven't been on earth in centuries.
That wizard came from the moon.
So as you can see, it's a great voiceover that everybody hates.
Lot of personality.
It's a terrible voiceover.
So Nolan North, who you may know as Nathan Drake, and also the Penguin from all the
Of the Batman games that have come out recently, and just a flurry of other games will replacing him.
He's a fantastic gentleman.
I have had the privilege of working with him.
[LAUGH] This is like torture.
And he's the funniest guy and a very talented gentleman, so kudos to you Nolan North.
That wizard came from the moon.
I'm really freaked out right now, that was....
That was really hard to do!
I don't know how Peter Dinklage did it but obviously he phoned that stuff in, so this is really cool, like response, like they really get that sort of response from the studios, so...
Definitely, fans gotta love that.
Yeah, there's that ongoing gag of Peter Dinklage really phoned this one in for a check, and I mean wow, for them to go back and re-record all the original dialogue, I mean guess that they're like we want continuity and stuff, but
Come on, they didn't need continuity.
They could've just been like hey, look at the new voice chip [SOUND].
Like there you go, it's [UNKNOWN] now.
Oh no, don't put a new voice-
Hey what's up guys?
[SOUND] But that's pretty cool.
That's cool that they responded.
I can't wait until somebody The clip of him saying-
That wizard came from the moon.
That wizard came from the moon, I hope he does it in the same, everything else is good but he doesn't in the cadence.
Why don't they cut that out of the game?
Cuz that was from the beta, and then they were like everybody made so much fun of it that they cut it out, and so I don't think it's in the live game.
But maybe they'll bring it back now.
Maybe they'll bring it back.
Because if he really, listen, if Nolan North, if anyone can do it, sell that line, that wizard came from the moon, it's Nolan North.
So there you go.
That's your little bit of gaming news.
I'm sorry we're not doing any of the cat com news from today including like Mirror's Edge trailers that came out.
I didn't see any of that.
I'm sorry that's the one that stood out to me.
There's plenty of other really big ones but Mirror's Edge released a trailer today.
And I'm super excited about Mirror's Edge.
There's a ton of other trailers out there.
Go look for those.
Get out of here.
But no wait stay, wait.
Stay until the end.
We only have 47 more minutes of content.
Call it 10.
But it's going to be good I promise because Ashley's got a story.
It's Ribbon Robots.
So you know at the olympics where they do the rhythmic gymnastics.
I'm sorry I had a hard time pronouncing that.
Go watch those trailers.
Shut up you.
alright, once again in Japan this company or group called the Amono Protecting Lab put out this video utilizing their DENSOVS-050 robotic arm.
The goal in this team is generally to work on creating techniques that extend the possibilities of visual representations.
What they did was- They took a few of the most common movements in rhythmic gymnastics and make the robot do it.
And it's really cool to watch this robot be really graceful, like that's not CG, he's actually swinging this little ribbon around in very beautiful kind of patterned way.
And there's all different kinds of ways that they've programmed it, so they have like, spirals snakes, vertical snakes, figure eights, large circles in front and overhead.
But it's super duper graceful and look at how shiny and beautiful that robot arm is.
It's not gonna replace anyone in the Olympics any time soon.
I hope this is the robot that gets self awareness, and tries to take over the world with it's ribbon skills.
Perfect, yeah, I would totally upload Skynet...
[CROSSTALK] Now what if he says like the only way to save humanity from itself, is to show the beauty of ribbon dancing.
And that it's like it goes all around the world ribbon dancing people feel better.>>>I have to be honest Ashley, I'm not impressed that he wasn't doing any cool ribbon stuff that like humans couldn't do.
I was hoping he was going to pull out some things.>>>Do more?>>>Pull out some sort of like move that we couldn't do because he can move like swifter or like>>>Like more clean.>>>Yeah.
Maybe they'll get there.
This particular lab is focused on having robots sort of express themselves visually to where people can understand them.
So that was one of the experiments they did.
They do a lot more too and if you want to go see Their website, it's figlab.jp.
Oh, I like that.
If you wanna check out what they're doing.
So yeah that's, they created these algorithms.
So that's actually what the robot's doing.
He's just going back and forth or making these shapes and then it's creating what Then like all of these beautiful certain movements.
What he's actually saying is, kill me!
Like you can't, it just looks so beautiful right now.
We're like, oh, that's so beautiful!
Yeah, I hate my life.
But yeah, that's it for headlines.
We are gonna take a very quick break, but before we do, this is a video that's been going around the internet this week, and I just love it so much.
So if you haven't seen it, here's some dirt bike surfing.
Welcome back to the show.
You've returned, thank you.
You didn't leave like Khail told you to.
Khail hates the show, he doesn't even like doing it, so we just force him to.
There's Mirror's Edge stuff out there.
That's true, you could be watching all that good stuff.
but can I tell you about a really cool Mod Squad that is awesome?
Yeah, of course.
Okay, let's do that.
[NOISE] Have you ever wanted to turn your phone into a hologram projector?
Now I have.
Now that the idea's in your head.
Cause YouTuber Mr. Who's the Boss usually does a bunch of stuff.
I looked through his channel.
Usually does an unboxing, the reviews and stuff for technology.
But he did this cool little DIY project that honestly I think anybody could do at home.
That's on the surface of a cell phone.
It's a little hologram projector and all you need is this stuff which is stuff you can find in your house.
CD case, jewel case, you got an extra one laying around, graph paper, pen, scissors, smart phone, knife or glass cutter OK.
You got a little exacto knife?
You draw us a little shape, make a little rhomboid.
Then you cut it out.
You put it underneath a jewel case and you cut out that shape.
And so you've cut out four of these.
You make all your different sides.
You tape them together and then you just Put it right down on your smartphone screen, and then you open, this is the important part, video made for holograms.
So there's actually a YouTube video, we might have it, yeah.
Here it is, right here.
If you open this up on YouTube, this is what it looks like.
But then if you're using it to project a hologram, this is you would play it, and that's the projection will give you the 3D [INAUDIBLE].
Okay, this is pretty awesome.
I mean it's so simple.
It's like brilliant.
Like I love it.
And I saw it and I was just like okay this is super cool.
Nice job Mr. Who's the boss.
You're the boss, Mr. Who's the boss.
Buy yeah so that's what it looks like when you turn the lights down, there you go.
It looks like a little hologram.
Oh man totally want to do that.
I know it's awesome.
Like you could totally try this at home this weekend.
If you try it, take a little video and send it to us.
But isn't that cool?
That's really neat.
It's just super simple.
I wish it didn't look that janky, but yeah.
Well he was saying he's like I messed up some of this stuff but the cleaner and better that your CD Jewel case is like the better it will look so just try to keep it pristine.
Well done Billy Bob.
What was his name?
Who's the Boss.
Mr. Who's the Boss.
Probably Tony Danza.
Nice Tony.>>>I'm assuming that's Tony Danza cause he's the boss, right.
Is that a thing?
Super creative and interesting and fun, but now let's talk about you It's time for your user feedback.
Everybody who responded to #tvmyad came up with some nice stuff, but everybody was very kind., very, very thoughtful of other drivers Kirk said.
You'll like this one.
KIrk said, "Link the billboard to speed cameras and put a picture of the over-speeding guy on the billboard.
Cool.>>>I like that.>>>I like that.>>>What out for this bad person.
Danny wrote in and said, pictures of galaxies with funny looking cats so people are filled with joy while in traffic or animal shaped clouds.
Danny's been on the internet before.
Raunchy wrote in said, I would post motivational phrases from my phone via Twitter each day to make people feel better about themselves and less
It's an interesting statement from the real raunchy, that's the guy's name, the real raunchy.
He's the real raunchy, he's gonna be, motivational statement.
I would do those Skeletors love Tumbler, just have a direct feed.
HAve you ever seen those?
It's like daily affirmations with Skeletor as a meme and they're hilarious.
It's like I will give hugs today and he's go his hands up like.
And then very lastly but certainly not least, Black Snow wrote in and said I'm going to make a pinata billboard.
If you get close to it, it drops free candy and then made a little Photoshop.
TDmyad free candy.
I like that.
I would get in a car accident for free candy, for sure.
If it exploded free candy onto the freeway, and I could open my sunroof and just let it fall in the car, that would be perfect.
That would be great.
Or just glue a little cup on top of your car so that when you get to your destination, there's some candy in there.
It's a good idea.
All right, guys.
It's time for our very last [UNKNOWN] feedback, which is always our phonetographer of the day.
A viewer Oliver wrote in, not the cat from the animated movie.
I didn't think that.
Are you sure?
Yup because Oliver from Oliver and Company is based on Oliver, the actual novelization.
Yes that's true.
So if anything I would think Oliver.
From Oliver Twist.
Okay, fair enough.
It's also not Oliver Twist, just FYI.
Oliver writes in a says, Hi I'm Oliver, I was going to a Giant's game and I saw this building and why, because there's a giant orange Y.
Wouldn't I take a picture with iPhone 6.
Anyway, like the show a lot.
So like the show, there's a giant orange Y.
Where is this?
It's in San Francisco, on the way to a Giant's game.
That's actually, you're really close to cnet San Francisco offices right there.
Yeah get in there and talk to Ryan and tell him to get back to work.
And also Bridget Carey.
Stop..well she's in New York...but Brian Ton, tell him stop lazin' around.
Get back to work Brian Ton.
Don't you have an Apple bite to record.
Got some Apple bites to make.
That's what he does.
Got some watches to buy, got some shoes to buy.
Yea and some Apple watches to get in the shower with and wash his hair with.
That' was probably one of my favorite things that Brian Ton has ever done.
Alright guys, we want you to send in your phone-tography Send us, in this order, you could email us email@example.com.
Make sure your picture's in the email, tell a story about it and give us permission to use it.
Say I give you permission Cashley to show this.
Cale and Ashley.
Or you can you do Ashale.
Yeah that's weird.
[INAUDIBLE] sounds awesome, my rapper name.
[INAUDIBLE] pretty great.
Oh yeah, that's good.
What would you use?
Would you make it a dollar sign?
No, I would make it a cent.
I like that even better.
And then of course if you would like to find us online, you can send somebody to the show by dropping tomorrowdaily.com on them like a ton of bricks or You can go over to Tomorrow Daily on Twitter or some other social media sites that you might be a fan of.
But you know, if you really wanna get to know us, find us on Twitter.
It's that easy, that easy.
That's it for today's show, we'll be back tomorrow with brand new [UNKNOWN] of weird, wonderful science fact, science fiction blowing up in your face But until then, be good humans.
And we'll see you guys next time.
We say goodbye to the show by toasting the future (Tomorrow Daily...
