CHICAGO --- If you've had your eye on a high-performance drip coffee brewer like the Bonavita BV1900TS but would rather not commit to guzzling down eight-cup pots each morning, then today is your lucky day. Here at the IHS 2015 show, a veritable cornucopia of fresh home appliances, Bonavita has just unveiled the $140 BV1500TS, a more petite version of its flagship countertop coffee machine.

Designed to whip up four to five cups of scrumptious joe with the same care as its big brother -- and priced a little less -- this gadget just may have your name on it.

Design and features

Looking at the BV1500TS in a vacuum you'd swear it was the splitting image of its pricier predecessor, the BV1900TS. The machine sports the same polished metallic body, compact footprint and overall layout as Bonavita's previous device. That's a good thing, since the BV1900TS' few parts and simple, functional design are a huge part of why I love the device. It's what makes the product both a breeze to clean and to operate and certainly helped it earned our Editor's Choice award.

The primary difference between to two units say Bonavita though is that this countertop appliance is fine-tuned for brewing up smaller batches of joe, four to five cups at a time. The company stresses, however, that just because the BV1500TS doesn't make as much coffee in one go doesn't mean what it creates is any less tasty. Bonavita claims it's to the contrary, in fact.

Equipped with the same internal hardware which gave the BV1900TS the chops to brew coffee correctly such as a high-powered heating element and large shower head, the BV1500TS' creators expect a similar level of performance. Bonavita also says the machine's cone-shaped type 4 filter basket is better suited for brewing smaller batches, as is its specially designed shower head.

If you're into pre-infusing your grounds this gadget has the same function as the BV1900TS which steeps its basket in hot water for 30 seconds before standard brewing begins in earnest.

Outlook

While Bonavita hasn't locked down a specific ship date for the new BV1500TS, it expects the coffeemaker to cost $140, which is lower than the larger $190 BV1900TS 8-cup brewer. Additionally Bonavita explained the new appliance is currently undergoing SCAA certification, which, if all goes smoothly, it will earn by summer 2015. UK and Australian prices weren't announced, but $140 converts to around £95 or AU$180.
