In brief

The new BMW 5-Series range, codenamed F10, will be on sale in Australia from June 2010. Initially, three petrol engines will be available: the AU$99,990 straight-six 528i, the AU$128,900 turbo six-cylinder 535i and the AU$178,900 turbo V8 550i. In September they will be joined by an entry-level four-cylinder turbo-diesel AU$83,300 520d.

Standard features across the range include Bluetooth hands-free, USB/iPod connectivity, sat nav, head-up display, bi-xenon headlights (petrol models only), leather, six airbags, stability control, active bonnet pedestrian protection, 18-inch alloy wheels and multi-zone climate control.

Adaptive headlights, 12-speaker hi-fi, voice recognition, radar-guided cruise control and night vision are available as options or standard inclusions in models with a larger engine. All members of the 5-Series family come with the new generation, easy-to-use iDrive system that we first saw on the 3-Series. It allows you to control the entertainment, navigation and car configuration systems via a 7-inch screen (10.2-inch on the 550i).

The 535i's 3-litre straight-six engine is boosted by a turbocharger, pumping out 225kW of power and 400Nm of torque. All this mumbo is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. When you're not attempting to equal the quoted 6.1-second zero to 100km/h sprint time, you can try getting close to the official 8.4L/100km fuel economy figure.

The new 5-Series will only be available in sedan form initially. A 5-Series wagon -- Touring in BMW-speak -- will join the range later, as will a high performance M5 version.
