Nokia N96

While the Nokia N96 took a while to come to market, the N96 is an impressive all-in-one device that deserves some recognition, most notably for the whopping 16GB of storage it offers.

Facing stiff competition

While the N96 is a powerful smartphone, a lot of new products have come out and stolen its thunder, including one from the Nokia family, the Nokia N97.

HTC Fuze vs. Nokia N96

The Nokia N96's doesn't differ all that much from the Nokia N95 in the looks department. It keeps the same dual-slider design and candybar shape, but Nokia updates the N96 with rounder edges and a sleeker face. It's very similar in size to the HTC Touch Pro and HTC Fuze (left).

Thick in the middle

The Nokia N96 measures 4.1 inches high by 2.2 inches wide by 0.7 inch deep and weighs 4.4 ounces, so while short, it's a bit thick and will make for a tight fit in a pants pocket.

A bit cheap feeling

For such a high-end device, we think the handset feels a bit cheap with the plastic edges. We're also not huge fans of the plastic battery cover since it feels pretty fragile and could crack if the phone took a tumble.

Dialing out

To access the alphanumeric keypad, just push the screen up. While flat, the keys are large and wide, minimizing mispresses.

Cramped quarters

The one downside of the keypad is that the top row of buttons is set pretty close to bottom of the front cover, so occasionally our thumb would hit up against the edge.

Press play

By sliding the screen down, you get access to dedicated media player keys (play, stop, and so forth). The N96 has a heavy focus on multimedia and comes with a music and video player, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

High-powered cameraphone

The N96 features the same 5-megapixel camera as the N95, but it's still one of the more high-powered lenses we've seen on a camera phone and features a number of advanced options. Picture quality is also impressive with very sharp definition.
