Also available in a 39-inch size for less, this Vizio series will outperform the others on the list by a bit, thanks to its local dimming technology. That, and its Smart TV suite, makes it among the best values on this list.

Barely squeaking under our price barrier at 40-inches, this solid-performing (but not Smart) Samsung series also comes in smaller sizes -- all the way down to 22 inches.

This 32-inch Samsung TV costs less than $300. We haven't reviewed it directly, but Samsung tells us it's essentially identical to one we really liked when we did review it. Need we say more? OK, fine, read on.
