Yahoo confirmed that its Web site was down temporarily today, but has not released details.

"For a brief period this afternoon, Yahoo.com was inaccessible to some users," a spokeswoman said in a statement. "We have identified the issue and are working to correct it immediately. We know that this may have caused some inconvenience and we apologize to our users who might have been affected."

The spokeswoman said she could not say how widespread the outage was, how long it lasted or what caused it.

Web surfers at CNET and on Twitter started reporting problems accessing Yahoo.com and related sites around 2:30 p.m. PDT. As of 3 p.m., some users at CNET were able to access Yahoo.

The outage comes amid rumors that AOL and possibly other firms are considering making offers to buy Yahoo. The rumors prompted a 6 percent rise in Yahoo's stock today.
