Wireless networking for Handspring

Intel's Xircom unit will offer the first wireless Ethernet module for Handspring's Springboard expansion slot. The unit, which allows people to access e-mail and the Internet via a wireless LAN (local area network), could help Handspring in its effort to expand the use of its products among businesses. The $299 SpringPort Wireless Ethernet module, which uses the 802.11b standard, moves data at up to 11mbps when used within 300 feet of an access point or hub on a wireless network. The unit, which is slightly smaller than a deck of cards, will be available this month from Xircom, which was acquired by Intel earlier this year and is now operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary.
