Wireless media streamer: Evesham Mbox

Evesham is shortly to release the Mbox -- a wireless media streamer that lets you pump your music to speakers dotted around the home

Evesham has been telling Crave all about its intriguing new Mbox wireless media streamer. Similar in size to the Evesham Mini PC, the device lets you store all manner of multimedia files, and can be used to stream digital music around your home.

It has a pair of 160GB hard drives that are set up in a RAID 1 mirroring configuration, so if one disk fails, your files will still be available on the second. There's a slim chance both drives could fail, but Evesham has thoughtfully included backup software, so your Beth Orton collection can be kept safe no matter what.

The Mbox also comes with an Mbridge network media streamer, which lets you pipe your tunes to additional speakers spread around the home. Up to five Mbridge devices can work with a single Mbox, and they can be connected wirelessly or via an Ethernet cable.

Ordinary mortals will have to pay £599 for an Mbox with two 160GB drives and one Mbridge, which is a lot considering alternative systems (albeit without hard drives) can be bought for around half the price. Even the Xbox 360 will stream media round the home, although in a slightly different way.

Still, if it's easier to set up than its notoriously complicated rivals, Crave will welcome it with open arms. Our test samples should arrive in the next couple of days, so watch out for a full review soon. -RR
