Independent web series Wastelander Panda has been picked up by Madman, the ABC and South Australia Film Corporation (SAFC) for a further six episodes.

With three episodes under its belt, Epic Films' Wastelander Panda has secured a co-production deal with Madman Production Company to develop new episodes of the series.

The deal is to create six new 10-minute episodes that will be available to watch online, covering the events between the episodes "Isaac and Rose" and "Arcayus and Rose" — the estrangement of the brothers, and the relationship and journey of Isaac and Rose.

The deal is a first for the ABC — commissioning content exclusively for its iView platform through a collaboration between its TV Multiplatform, Fiction and Arts departments. Arul Baskaran, controller ABC Multiplatform, said, "It's a great fit — building on iView as a creative platform for exciting, innovative Australian storytelling."

Epic Films is currently developing the script, after which Madman will seek production funding later this year. At this stage, the episodes will be looking at a 2014 airing.

"This development deal does not guarantee that the series will be made, as we will need to secure production financing once the scripts are finished," Epic Films said. "But we're very excited to be working with an amazing team from Madman, the ABC and the SAFC, who between them have decades of experience in drama development, and are helping us to take Wastelander Panda to the next level. We're confident that we'll be able to go into production on the new episodes soon."

It's a fantastic break for an indie production house nevertheless, and heartening to see a brilliant concept that would have been deemed unmarketable in the boardroom getting the attention it deserves.
