The social media company acquires the machine learning specialist to bolster its visual-processing chops.

What do you get when you cross a little birdie and a magic pony? Machine learning.

Twitter says it has bought Magic Pony Technology, a London-based company that specializes in machine learning -- a key ingredient in artificial intelligence -- related to visual processing.

"Machine learning is increasingly at the core of everything we build at Twitter," said Jack Dorsey, Twitter CEO and co-founder, in a statement.

Magic Pony's expertise is in creating algorithms that can recognize features in images. Twitter's blog post announcing the acquisition didn't mention how much the company spent on the deal (Techcrunch says $150 million, citing two unnamed sources) or whether those algorithms could recognize children's toys.
