TV chip company gets $19 million

Scotland's CRLO Displays, which specializes in a type of LCOS chip for large-screen projection TVs, nabs funding.

Scotland's CRLO Displays, which specializes in a type of liquid-crystal-on-silicon chip for large-screen projection televisions, announced it has raised $19 million in venture capital. The company designs F-LCOS (Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal on Silicon) chips. These devices--which include semiconductors, a mirror and a layer of liquid crystal--serve as projectors for large-screen projection televisions, but they have proven difficult to produce.

Intel delayed and is redesigning its first LCOS chip, while Brillian, which won a contract to supply LCOS televisions to Sears, recently hit a roadblock.
