Triple J Beats the drum with Apple Music takeover

Triple J's Zan Rowe will meet Beats 1's Zane Lowe this November when the Aussie radio station takes over the airwaves of Apple's global internet radio service.

Triple J is partnering with Beats 1 for a music "takeover" during November.

The world is about to be treated to a lot more Chet Faker, Boy & Bear and Courtney Barnett with news that Triple J is going global on Beats 1 this month.

The ABC radio station announced the news today as part of Ausmusic Month, Triple J's annual celebration of Australian recording artists, songwriters and music producers. As part of a month-long partnership, Triple J will be airing four one-hour shows on Apple Music's Beats 1 station, to "spotlight Australian Music."

The programs will air every weekend of November, kicking off on Saturdays at 11 a.m. PT for the US west coast. Australian listeners will be able to tune in on Sundays at 6 a.m. AEDT or Mondays at 1 a.m. AEDT.

While Triple J can be streamed online from anywhere in the world (as those who have tried to listen to the Hottest 100 abroad will no doubt attest) the partnership is a big coup for the Aussie station. With major global DJs like former BBC Radio 1 personality Zane Lowe, stations based in London, LA and New York, and a 24-7 broadcast, Beats 1 is a massive Apple-driven platform that offers almost unmatched exposure.

The takeover will kick off this Saturday with Triple J stalwarts Zan Rowe and Dom Alessio hosting an hour-long show featuring the likes of Dead Letter Circus, Unearthed High winners Mosquito Coast and a world-premiere track from Brisbane artist Emma Louise.

Triple J presenters Matt and Alex and Veronica and Lewis will then get their turn, with airtime dedicated to Courtney Barnett and Chet Faker, among others.

Now Beats 1 Director, Zane Lowe revealed the Triple J takeover in his show, saying, "It's always been the dream here at Beats 1 to work in collaboration with everybody, including other radio stations."

In true Triple J fashion, the station's content director Ollie Wards said the team was "stoked" to be showcasing Australian artists to the world and "recommending music to people in 100 countries."

"Triple J is all about supporting the best new Australian music, so our residency on the Beats 1 Takeover in November is an awesome opportunity for the all-Australian acts we'll be playing to build their international fan base."
