In what is being described by publisher Activision as "a first for the Call of Duty franchise", video game developer Treyarch has released an iPhone app to tie in with the most recent addition to the franchise, Call of Duty: World at War. And, thankfully, it's not a watered down port of the game.

Instead, the app gives players access to stats and info about their time playing the game. A player can use the app to boast to other players about their achievements while away from the game, showing off their rank, kills-to-deaths ratio and weapon usage. The app also features a newsfeed with links to Treyarch's twitter account, and updates about the latest contests and double-XP weekends.

Call of Duty is a long-running first-person shooter franchise well-known for its excellent multiplayer component. The next instalment of the game, Modern Warfare 2, is due for release in November of 2009, with publisher Activision planning "the biggest entertainment launch ever" for its release.

The World at War app is available now as a free download from the iTunes store.
