STOCKS TO WATCH: Inktomi, JDS Uniphase, OpenTV and Resonate

Expect the following technology stocks to be among Friday's most actively traded issues: Inktomi, JDS Uniphase, OpenTV and Resonate.

  • Inktomi (Nasdaq: INKT)

    Inktomi should see some heavy action on the heels of its strong third-quarter earnings report.

    The Internet software developer posted a profit of $8.8 million, or 7 cents a share, on sales of $78.6 million.

    First Call Corp. consensus was looking for 5 cents a share in the quarter.

    Its shares closed off 0.81 cents to 83 ahead of the earnings report.

    The $78.6 million in sales marks a 190 percent improvement from the year-ago quarter when it lost $6.1 million, or 6 cents a share, on sales of $27.1 million.

    For the fiscal year, Inktomi earned $13 million, or 11 cents a share, on sales of $223.5 million compared to a loss of $29.2 million, or 29 cents a share, on sales of $73.5 million in fiscal 1999.

  • JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU)

    The fiber-optic equipment maker shut up its critics Thursday when it hurdled analysts' estimates in its first quarter and offered an extremely positive outlook.

    In the quarter, it made $177 million, or 18 cents a share, on sales of $786 million, 2 cents ahead of the consensus estimate.

    Its shares closed up 3.44 to 74.44 ahead of the earnings report but moved up another 11 a share in after-hours trading.

    The $786 million in sales marks a 171 percent improvement from the year-ago quarter when it earned $65 million, or 8 cents a share, on sales of $290 million.

  • OpenTV (Nasdaq: OPTV)

    OpenTV might take some lumps Friday after it posted a smaller-than-expected loss in its third quarter but warned of a wider-than-expected loss in its fourth quarter.

    The interactive television firm lost $3.2 million, or 6 cents a share, on sales of $18.7 million.

    First Call Corp. consensus expected it to lose 7 cents a share in the quarter.

    Company officials are predicting fourth-quarter sales of between $21 million to $22 million and a loss of between 4 cents to 6 cents a share.

    First Call Corp. consensus was expecting a loss of 4 cents a share in the quarter.

    OpenTV shares finished up 0.38 to 25.25 ahead of the earnings report.

  • Resonate (Nasdaq: RSNT)

    Resonate should be active after it easily topped analysts' estimates in its third quarter, posting a loss of $6.1 million, or 26 cents a share, on sales of $6.1 million.

    First Call Corp. consensus expected the Internet software developer to lose 30 cents a share in the quarter.

    Its shares closed up 4.25 to 45.75.

    The $6.1 million in sales marks a 112 percent improvement from the year-ago quarter when it lost $3.1 million, or 19 cents a share, on sales of $2.9 million.
