STMicroelectronics to buy silicon tech firm

The European chip giant plans to acquire Arithmos, a maker of silicon technology for the flat-panel display industry, for about $43 million.

STMicroelectronics, a developer of integrated circuits, today said it plans to acquire Arithmos, a maker of silicon technology for the flat-panel display industry, for about $43 million.

STMicroelectronics, the giant European chipmaker, said the acquisition of Santa Clara, Calif.-based Arithmos includes its product portfolio, intellectual property and any technology developed by the company.

The companies expect the transaction to conclude within the next month.

Geneva-based STMicroelectronics and Arithmos noted that their merger is a strong complementary fit--building on the strength of Arithmos' advanced digital display technology coupled with STMicroelectronics' strengths in semiconductor process technology and manufacturing.
