Steph Curry: Be true to yourself but know the consequences

From basketball to malaria, the Warriors point guard talks about how he blends sports, tech and his social beliefs.

Golden State Warriors player Stephen Curry bought a lot of malaria nets last year. He's been involved with Nothing But Nets, a campaign aimed at raising awareness and funding to address malaria. He pledged to donate three nets for every three-pointer he makes. Last season, he made 402.

The two-time NBA MVP talked about the different intersections of work, personal beliefs and tech, of course, Tuesday at TechCrunch Disrupt.

Aside from being a well-liked point guard in the Bay Area, he's also embraced the tech scene. Curry co-founded a social media network called Slyce. He's also the face of digital media startup PressPlay.

"[Tech] is ingrained in the DNA of the area," he said.

Curry also addressed the recent controversy with 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who has been roundly criticized for his decision to sit out, or more recently, kneel, during the playing of the National Anthem. Curry has expressed support for Kaepernick, though he said when the basketball season starts, he'll likely be standing. He said he's learned the value of being true to himself and knowing the consequences of doing so.

"You're not going to please everyone, and that's what America is about," he said.
