Sony S1 tablet gets September pre-order date as new photos emerge

Sony's S1 Android tablet looks to get a UK pre-order date of 1 September. Meanwhile, photos and videos of both the S1 and the dual-screen S2 have surfaced online...

More details have surfaced regarding Sony's first Android tablet: the boringly-named S1 will be available to pre-order in the UK from 1 September, according to reports.

This Is My Next says it's seen documents that indicate Sony Centre shops in Britain will be taking pre-orders from the beginning of September, but sadly, apart from that tidbit, info on a proper release date and pricing is thin on the ground.

We know that the S1 will run a Sony-skinned version of Honeycomb, the tablet-based version of Google's Android OS, will pack a 9.4-inch screen and a peculiar curved back that means it looks a bit like a folded paperback, or a door wedge depending on how generous you're feeling.

Along with its sister tablet, the dual-screen, inventively named S2, the S1 will chug along on an Nvidia Tegra 2 chip. Both tablets are PlayStation certified, though we're not sure yet what that'll mean, as neither tablet features Xperia Play-style physical buttons.

Meanwhile, new photos and videos of the two tablets have surfaced on Italian tech blog Notebook Italia. They've got loads of photos and videos, so we recommend clicking that link and checking them out.

Is Sony going to kill the iPad with its Android efforts? Or is it more likely to screw the whole thing up? Let us know your ominous predictions in the comments, or on our Facebook page.
