Sony Ericsson's new phones

Sony Ericsson's new phones

Sony Ericsson this morning announced -6455121-1.html?tag=txt">four new GSM cell phones for the North American market, three of which are aimed at midrange consumers.

The candy bar-style Sony Ericsson K310a comes in silver and blue and offers a VGA camera, 15MB of memory, a media player with support for MP3 files, a speakerphone, messaging, and e-mail and PC syncing. The Sony Ericsson K510a comes in black or purple and sports a standard candy bar form factor. Features include a 1.3-megapixel camera, Bluetooth, 28MB of memory, a speakerphone, messaging, and e-mail and PC syncing. The company also added another Walkman phone to its lineup with the W300i. It has a cool flip-phone design (somewhat unique for Sony Ericsson) and the usual range of Walkman phone features, such as MP3 and AAC music playback, an FM radio, a Memory Stick Micro card slot (expandable up to 1GB), Bluetooth, 20MB of internal memory, messaging, and an infrared port. Finally, we have the Sony Ericsson K790 Cyber Shot, which brings camera phones in this country to a whole new level. Inside the standard candy bar shape are a 3.2-megapixel camera (yes, you heard me correctly) with flash, a 16X digital zoom, red-eye reduction, video record and playback, and PictBridge technology for easy transfers of photos from your phone to your PC. Other features include 64MB of integrated memory, a music player with support for MP3 and AAC files, Bluetooth, an infrared port, and an expandable memory slot.

The K310a and K510a are triband (GSM 850/1800/1900), the W300i is a quad-band world phone (GSM 850/900/1800/1900), and the K790 comes in a GSM 850/900/1900 and GSM 900/800/1900 versions. Availability for most models should be by the second quarter of this year, but carriers have not been announced. We hope that will change, though, as these phones sound very cool.

Sony Ericsson also announced a new initiative with Google that will put Google's Blogger and Web-search features on the company's camera phones. The K790a will be the first model to support this feature. Finally, the company announced a number of accessories, including a Bluetooth car speakerphone and three new Bluetooth headsets. We'll follow up with more coverage of the headsets in the next couple of days.
