DVD players will boldly go where few consumer electronics devices have gone before. On the next space shuttle Discovery launch scheduled for March 8, astronauts will have five Sony DVP-FX1 portable DVD players in tow for playing movies and music.
The three astronauts on the Discovery will be delivering the players and about 50 DVDs and CDs to the International Space Station. The DVD player, which retails for $1,499, has a 7-inch LCD and weighs about 1.5 pounds. NASA bought the players, but a representative would not say how much NASA paid for them.
