Short Takes: Nortel unit plans to ship home networking kit

Nortel Networks' NetGear will ship a high-speed home networking kit in October. The kit--which connects PCs together through standard phone jacks--features data transfer speeds at 10 megabits per second (mbps), ten times faster than products now shipping. NetGear will ship networking cards that fit into PCI slots in October and cards that support USB ports by early December. NetGear will also unveil hardware that connects PCs to cable and DSL modems and a new 56K modem that can be used by multiple PCs simultaneously.
