Short Take: Virata buys DSL chip company

Virata, a communications processor and software maker, has agreed to acquire privately held Excess Bandwidth for about $315 million in stock. Excess makes integrated circuits and develops communications algorithms. Virata is expected to combine Excess Bandwidth's expertise with symmetric digital subscriber line (SDSL) technology, with its own asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) systems to round out Virata's high-speed Net access portfolio. The deal is expected to close during the third quarter.
