Short Take: ICQ tops 40 million registered users

ICQ has surpassed 40 million registered users. ICQ was acquired by America Online in June 1998 when AOL bought Mirabilis, creator of the Net messaging software. At the time, ICQ had 12 million registered users; within four months of the acquisition, ICQ passed the 20 million registered user mark. AOL is embroiled in an instant messaging standards war that was sparked by Microsoft's release of its messaging software, MSN Messenger.
