Microsoft president Steve Ballmer, speaking at a developer's conference in Las Vegas, said the final version of the Windows NT 5.0 operating system upgrade is likely to be "8 to 12 months away." The software--the subject of increased scrutiny after continued delays--represents a huge bet for the company, given its aspirations to take on even the largest computing tasks. Some have predicted NT 5.0 will be delayed until the year 2000.
