The Stanford Computer Center suffered a major power outage today, affecting Internet access throughout the region. The problem might not be fixed before the weekend. Among those that said they were affected were BARRNet, part of BBN Planet, and the Los Angeles Times online service. The Stanford Computer Center is where many Net connections to the outside world pass through. "We having a big power outage, and we're having problems with our computers and our phones," a university worker said. The problem began when a 12,000-volt switch gear failed at the Cardinal cogeneration facility, the university's main power source, a university spokeswoman said. The blackout is a high-profile embarrassment for Stanford, which has touted its facility's independence. She declined to elaborate until the university put out a press release later today. Calls to the university's facility went unanswered.
