Holmes and Watson look extra pensive in 'Sherlock' season 4 image

Actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman appear to be in a brooding mood in the latest image released for the upcoming season.

Fans will have to be patient to see what dangerous adventures Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson get into in the new season of "Sherlock," since it won't be airing until 2017.

But that doesn't mean the BBC can't dish out some more clues.

On Wednesday, the official "Sherlock" Twitter account released a new image of Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Watson (Martin Freeman) looking rather reflective. The somber mood of the image may hint at sad times ahead for the crime-solving friends, but for now it's all just speculative.

There's no sign of other "Sherlock" characters such as Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey), Mary Morstan/Mrs. Watson (Amanda Abbington), Detective Inspector Greg Lestrade (Rupert Graves), Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) or Sherlock's brother Mycroft Holmes (Mark Gatiss), but that doesn't mean they won't be in for a world of hurt in the next season.

For a more revealing look, be sure to watch the full "Sherlock" season 4 trailer that shows the usual characters in action, as well as a very giggly new enemy played by Toby Jones.
