Server problem slows Microsoft sites

Three major Microsoft-owned Web sites had technical problems Wednesday, preventing some people from connecting. Unlike the router difficulties and denial-of-service attacks that plagued the giant for three days in January, this time a "routine" glitch in a server that stores, or caches, Web pages for Microsoft.com, MSN.com and Expedia.com on Wednesday afternoon, a company representative said. Keynote Systems had noticed that the rate of successful connections to Web pages on those sites dropped from 98 percent to around 85 percent after 2 p.m. PDT. By 4:30 p.m., the problem had been resolved, the Microsoft representative said.
