Seagate's new superflexible external-hard-drive family just got a new member, and it's a significant upgrade.
The company announced Tuesday the latest addition to its: an desktop external hard drive called the 3TB GoFlex Desk that offers 3TB of storage.
Like other drives in the GoFlex line, the new 3TB GoFlex Desk comes with the flexibility to adapt its standard USB 2.0 interface to a USB 3.0 or FireWire 800 connection just by changing the adapter.
On top of that, it's one of a few solutions on the market that comes with an NTFS software driver for Mac, meaning you can use it formatted for Windows' non-compromising NTFS file system while still allowing Mac devices to have full write and read access to it.
Normally, in order to support both Macs and PCs, a drive is formatted in the FAT32 file system, which can't handle files of 4GB and larger.
Despite its significantly larger capacity, the new 3TB GoFlex Desk has the same design as existing GoFlex Desk drives. It is available now with the standard USB 2.0 adapter and costs around $250. Its USB 3.0 and FireWire adapters can be purchased separately and cost another $40 and $50, respectively.
