Samsung Galaxy S on O2 updating to Android 2.3 Gingerbread in May

It's good news for owners of the Samsung Galaxy S on O2, who will be getting an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for their smart phones in a matter of weeks.

Oh that magic feeling -- oh, for an O2 Android update. It's good news for owners of the Samsung Galaxy S on the network, who will be getting an Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for their smart phones in a matter of weeks.

O2 tweeted the news in answer to a stroppy customer tired of being bereft of Gingerbread, as spotted by the dialtosave blog. The networks's Twitter mouthpiece said, "Good news, it's coming soon -- May!"

The Galaxy S launched last summer, bringing with it a huge Super AMOLED screen. It's followed by the Samsung Galaxy S 2, which includes Gingerbread from the day it's born. The design of the Galaxy phones has proved controversial, with Apple suing Samsung for "slavishly copying" the iPhone and iPad.

The update has already been released into the wild for some lucky Galaxians. Like a Viking horde sweeping across the fjords and phone shops of Europe, Android 2.3 has hit phones in Holland, Germany and the Nordic countries. Three is also updating to 2.3 in 'weeks'.

O2 has a slate of new phones on the way that will pack Gingerbread from day one, including the dual-core HTC Sensation and PlayStation-gaming Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. The Xperia Play was controversially delayed by O2 over software bugs, while Three and Vodafone were forced to delay.
