Samsung Galaxy Nexus to be announced 19 October

Samsung and Google have sent out invites for its postponed Ice Cream Sandwich event. Galaxy Nexus next week, anyone?

"Calling All First-to-knowers" reads the headline on the invite. Not exactly catchy, but it's the Ice Cream Sandwich logo at the bottom that's got us excited.

The event is scheduled for next Wednesday, reports BGR, starting at 10am. Although that's 10am in Hong Kong, where the event will be held -- which works out as 3am UK time. Better get the cocoa on, it's going to be a late one.

If you want to watch the announcement live, it'll be streamed over on youtube.com/android.

As well as Ice Cream Sandwich, we're expecting the Samsung Galaxy Nexus to make an appearance. The Galaxy Nexus (previously known as the Nexus Prime) was going to be released on Tuesday just gone, but Google and Samsung decided to postpone it out of respect for Steve Jobs, who died last week.

But it looks pretty certain to be there next week, with the previous trailer promising "Something BIG is coming." The Galaxy Nexus is rumoured to have a 4.6-inch screen, which is pretty large indeed, and it's a Super AMOLED job, with 720p resolution and 320dpi pixel resolution, which is crisper than a magazine. It'll also be the first handset to run the Ice Cream Sandwich incarnation of Google's Android OS.

Ice Cream Sandwich has had a few leaks itself of late. Google accidentally put up a video on its Android Developers YouTube channel, then hastily took it down. It was also shown in an eBay video. Last week a batch of screenshots of the new software also leaked, showing off its Tron-like interface.

The Galaxy Nexus is the most eagerly-awaited handset this year, iPhone 4S aside. Will it live up to the hype? And will you be tuning in at that ungodly hour? Let us know on our Facebook page.
