Rough Guides climbs into e-books

Rough Guides, a publisher of travel guides, says it has selected e-book conversion provider Texterity to put its travel books into an electronic format. Rough Guides said that for the first time it will make more than 20 e-book versions of its travel guides available this month. The company also plans to turn its dictionary phrasebooks and other titles into e-books. The guides will come in the Microsoft Reader format as well as the PocketPC, according to Rough Guides. The London-based company is offering eight titles for free through a promotion with Microsoft. Beginning July 1, it will start selling its travel e-books through retailers, such as Amazon.com and Barnes&Noble.com. The company said the suggested retail price for the e-books will be about 20 percent to 30 percent less than print books, which sell for about $10 to $15. Rough Guides publishes more than 150 titles including 100 travel guides, language phrasebooks, music guides, world music CDs, and pocket Internet guides.
