Qwest inks dark fiber deals

Denver-based Qwest Communications inked a deal today with e.spire communications' ACSI Network Technologies to construct and install a 140-mile fiber optic network. Additionally, Qwest signed $45 million in contracts for added fiber routes along its nationwide network. Qwest said in a release that the routes will support its planned Internet Protocol network, designed specifically to support high-end commercial customers. The network will span more than 18,500 miles and serve more than 130 cities--and is scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of 1999.
