Push technology is coming to Net access via satellite, adding a new dimension to the service.
On Thursday at Internet World, Hughes Network Systems' DirectPC will launch a product called Turbo Webcast that "pushes" information to users via high-speed networks. ABCNews.com, Disney.com, and E Online will be the launch sites, and more will follow next week, a DirectPC spokesman said.
In addition, the company will announce Turbo Newscast, which delivers Usenet groups to DirectPC customers through push technology. Both services will be offered to subscribers by year's end at no additional cost, the spokesman said. DirectPC subscriptions now begin at $19.95 per month.
These product enhancements represent the latest twist in applying push technology, which has received much publicity in the past year. Despite the potential benefits, the technology has its skeptics.
For example, a report issued earlier this year by the Hurwitz Group questioned the business value of push, dubbing it a "solution in search of a problem." It said many jobs do not require time-sensitive information and people do not need additional interruptions besides email and the telephone.
