Prodigy to Offer SHAREWARE.COM

Prodigy announced today that it is adding a new service that will let users search for, browse, and download software from archives and vendor sites on the Net. Called SHAREWARE.COM, the service, a product of CNET: The Computer Network, has a database of more than 140,000 software files.

Thirty-three leading hardware and software companies are participating in the SHAREWARE.COM launch including Adobe, Apple, Borland, Claris, Compaq, IBM, Intel, Lotus, Microsoft, Netscape, Novell, and Silicon Graphics. Says CNET CEO Halsey Minor, "For the first time ever, consumers have one central place where they can download the Internet's most popular files such as Netscape Navigator 2.0, Doom, Netscape plug-ins, Apple's MoviePlayer, Eudora, Heretic, Microsoft's Flight Simulator, and Sim City updates, all from one Web site."

The SHAREWARE.COM service is being offered at no additional cost to Prodigy members and is also available free to consumers with a direct connection to the Net, CompuServe, or America Online.
